The Secret Path to Success in Online Video
When people think of distributing videos online the first spot that may come to mind is YouTube. However, another alternative to distribute video is New York based, Blip.tv. They also have staff in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, and London.
At the Web 2.0 Expo, Dina Kaplan, VP of Marketing and Public Relations at Blip.tv, shared with an attentive crowd, The Secret Path to Success in Online Video.
Currently, Blip.tv receives 330 millions views per month. They are the largest privately owned video network. Their top producers are making a million dollars a year while other some of the other producers make $60, 000- $80,000 a year.
Kaplan shared great tips on how one can be successful at getting their content out into the world. The first tip was if you are going to produce videos, you have to do it regularly. Kaplan shared a great example of why this is important. There is show on Blip.tv that is produced by a husband and wife team, they decided to go on vacation. There were no new episodes while they went on vacation which pissed off their views. They lost over a million viewers and still have not been able to get the whole audience back.
According to Kaplan, successful content is getting longer. Videos running from 18 minutes and up are doing well and gaining audiences. People want more to watch online. Also, if you want build an audience; you should not try to go mass on the web because it is difficult to do. It is best to target a niche community. People crave to be a part of a community, think about who you can serve.
Another awesome tip is that you should also always communicate with your audience, ask the fans what they would like to see. Always respond back to get them to keep them involved. A happy fan will tell the world about you.
Kaplan stated that a promise that producers have from Blip.tv is that they will always listen to what their users have to say. I can attest that they do listen and care about their producers. Did I mention that they also have killer holiday parties?
Besides YouTube, think about giving Blip.tv a try. I personally have used Blip.tv and prefer them because they let you distribute to various platforms including Youtube. On the morning that Kaplan did the workshop, Blip.tv announced a new deal with AOL Video. It’s a growing network with the door open for opportunities.
